Description
San Diego County : Anza Borrego Desert State Park
Though probably not considered a superbloom, Anza Borrego's landscape brought forth an abundance of wildflowers in 2023. Blooms appeared as early as November following an active monsoon season and autumn rains, erupting in parched valleys with vibrant displays of color through winter and spring.
Aching for a glimpse I got up well before dawn to visit Henderson Canyon Road just outside of Borrego Springs. Walking through dry flood basins, their congealed mud cracking beneath my feet like brittle tiles, I soon found a gathering of low sprawling Desert Sand Verbena. As I set up my camera mist drizzled from clouds overhead -- it absorbed morning light to brush the entire valley with a soft purple glow.

Nice capture, William! I've always wanted to make an image of Verbena in the Desert but haven't been lucky with the timing.

Gorgeous. Looks like you photo stacked, which worked really well (?) L/F
William Dunigan replied:
Thank you Jackie! I was very close to those little flowers which required multiple shots with different focus points to get everything sharp. I then stacked them in photoshop and blended using layer masks.

Almost unbelievable as a real landscape, William, but I enjoyed your description of the discovery and capture immensely. A HUGE favourite!
William Dunigan replied:
Thanks Bette, seeing so much color in such a dry place definitely felt strange!
