This path through the woods leads to a place called Bottom Creek Gorge. Its an awe-inspiring place. You walk along through the woods and all of a sudden- don't look down!! at least, be sure and hang on to a tree if you do. With no warning whatsoever you're at the edge of a gorge...I had to sit down and look at it from several feet away. The world is full of surprises- and I really enjoyed this walk in the woods with my son. The early morning light trickling through the new spring growth in the trees had a magical feeling...one of those often overlooked beautiful moments in life...

I grew up exploring the outdoors here in Southwest Virginia. My family would often go for long drives and end up hiking in the woods where my parents would identify plants and trees and point out animal tracks as they taught us to appreciate the awesomeness of God's creation. I can still remember the first time I saw a pink "Ladies Slipper" growing up out of a pile of leaves deep in a forest. Those adventures with my family still inspire my landscape paintings today but I'm also blessed with a group of friends who love to paint outdoors.
