Description
A gentle stroll down the beach brings to mind halcyon days of vacation and rest.
Some people live on the beach all year round, but for those of us who live inland, the trips we make to the coast are ones we look forward to all year. This is a time to leave the phone in the hotel room, kick off the shoes, and take a stroll in the sand along the seashore, listening to the sound of the waves as the surf tickles around our feet.
One of the odd – but extremely pleasant – things about the beach is that the people walking upon it invariably seem to be happy. There is little of the face down to the ground, plowing forward walk that is more common in the town and city. Instead, there is a free and easy gait, a relaxed strolling with arms gently swinging, head back, eyes focused on the water and the horizon beyond.
Who wouldn’t be relaxed in a setting like this?
On the Beach, the artwork, invites the viewer to step onto a wide, sandy beach – one that stretches out for miles, and invites the walker to think of nothing but the next step, the sand squeezing between the toes, the cool freshness of the water. This is a place of peace and tranquility, a place of beauty and majesty, a place to let the mind wander away from the schedules and assignments and chores that spend too much time filling it.
Indeed, the very rhythmic sound of the waves serves to drive busy thoughts out of one’s head, and in timing with the waves, one’s thoughts slow down to a gentle, ready pace. “Look at that wave!” we say to ourselves as we look out into the water. “I wonder what it will look like when it hits the shore?”
Useless, pointless thoughts? Not at all. These are thoughts of the quiet mind, the one at rest, the one concerned with nothing more than strolling On the Beach.
(The image, one the beach, is taken from the beach along Lincoln City, Oregon.)
